Be/Longing: Among Trees
This book emerged from walking with my dog and my camera through the same woods for years. Every day we head into them for both exercise and to see what’s happening. We take different paths, see different areas with every walk we take.
These woods I walk in surround my home in far northern Wisconsin. They change daily with the light and moisture and during each season with wind, rain, and snow. In addition to natural changes and climate crisis caused changes, the woods, originally Ojibwe land, have been clear cut and mined for gravel for over a century. They are now undergoing a recovery and will eventually become a mature woods. Within this recovery, there is constantly changing light that illuminates its vital presence. I am attracted to the small areas of rhythm, gesture and beauty that are right around me rather than larger landscapes. These are the areas that beckon through the trees or show up at my feet or even are literally right in front of my eyes if I’m focused and paying attention. And each walk is a lesson in paying attention. I’ve learned that giving attention is not something to be learned once, but needs to be continually practiced.
Over the span of several years, a series of images has come together, expressing the magic and showing the beauty within this vulnerable environment. A book took form, small, intimate and quiet by design. My desire is to echo the feeling of being alone among the trees, and passing it along to you.
